Norm and Values Beliefs in Society Assignment

Q Purpose Norms come from values and beliefs. We act based on what we as a society think is important. This a chance to examine that across several cultures. Task For each of the five societies in Global Sociology, use information from the text to write a short paragraph describing one norm and the value or belief behind it. Be sure to explain how the norm connects to the value or belief. examples: In the USA the norm is that families have meals together on a regular basis. We do this because we value family. Eating is something that everyone needs to do, and eating meals together as a family gives people time to communicate and bond with each other. {Note this is not one of the five societies in Global Sociology; it is simply an example of how to do the assignment.} In Egypt it is common for the people (the norm) to fill in seats on a bus or at a movie theater by all sitting close to one another rather than spreading out. This norm represents the value of community in Egypt. They wish to be with other people and participate together.

In Japan ‘Bowing’ is an important norm especially in business relationships. By assessing the status of the person, higher or lower, you need to bow low or high. Also, you need to use the right form of address. Bowing higher or lower depends on whether your status has more or less social respect than the person in front of you. So, decision must be taken rapidly to understand the way you will bow to him (Schneider & Silverman, 1997).
